Midland League Division 2 – 20/05

The Tamworth Senior Team travelled to sunny Yate on Saturday for the second Midland League Division 2 match.

There were only 12 athletes and it seems Birchfield Harriers and Telford AC athletes were less keen for a day in the south west of England. The final scores were:-

Yate AC566
Cheltenham & County521
Tamworth AC266
Birchfield Harriers229
Telford AC195
Coventry GodivaFailed to show

Again, it was our specialist 800m runners who stole the show, Lottie McLaren won hers in 2:18.76, then also won the 1500m in 5:01.01. Tom Ainsworth won the 800m in 1:55.05, then determined to win, as ever, held off a strong challenge to win 400m in a PB 48.56 secs. He then set the fastest 100m time by a Tamworth athlete this year. While we are on 800m, Pete Hackett took 6 secs of his PB to win the “B” race in 2:04.66, then 5 secs of his 3000m PB to come 3rd in 9:13.97.

Good to have Alex Berrow back from injury and he threw 47.99m for 2nd place in the Hammer and a 5 point bonus, 12m in the Shot for 2nd place and 3rd in the Discus with 29.39m. Greg Richards came 3rd in the Javelin, 2nd in the “B” Discus and stretched his legs in both sprints. Coach Matt Hargreaves, interrupted his trip back from Cornwall to check out his athletes and throw Javelin for 3rd in the “B” and Discus 1st in the “C”. Will Fleming was 3rd in the Long Jump, 3rd in the “B” 400m and then ran both relays, Sprint Relay along with Pete, Tom and Greg and the Mixed 400m Relay with Tom, Lottie and Emily Findlater for 2nd place. The “B” mixed relay team who were also 2nd was Pete again (he is a marathon runner) Kat Snowden (far from fully fit) Evie Caffrey and Richard Franklin, in only his second appearance for the Club, who took some persuading, but I’m sure will gladly volunteer next time. Richard set a new PB in the 1500m earlier, so good day.

Sarah Williams, fresh from a trip to France, persuaded the hosts to lend her the Pole she duly won the Pole Vault competition with, which was fun as she was competing in the Long Jump at the same time on the opposite side of the Stadium, moving then straight on to the Javelin, then Shot then the Javelin, for a new PB. Middle Distance runner Kat, kindly came to throw Javelin, Shot and Discus before the relay. Young Evie Caffrey not saving herself for another League competition on the following day, came 2nd in the “B” 800m won the “B” 1500m before taking legs in both relays. A big welcome back to Emily Findlater who came 2nd in the 400m Hurdles, 4th in the 400m and 2nd in the 3000m. Even after all that she ran a leg of the sprint relay along with Sarah, Evie and Lottie and the Mixed Relay with Tom, Lottie and Will.
