Asics Greater Manchester Marathon, Sunday 8th April 2018

Ben Evans was in action for Tamworth AC over the weekend at the Asics Greater Manchester Marathon; his first race as a veteran having turned 40 in March.
The recent unfavourable weather thankfully turned to provide perfect conditions on the day as thousands of runners took to the roads of Manchester for the first of the big UK spring marathons this year.
Ben arrived at the start line in good form on the back of a strong cross-country season and a personal best performance at the British Half Marathon Championships. Right from the gun he started positively, ticking off the early miles with a trademark consistency of pace, and reached the halfway point slightly ahead of his best time in Berlin last year.received_10155398537416464
As the front end of the field thinned out in the latter stages of the race, fatigue started to set in and Ben’s early strength faded a little. He pushed on to cross the finishing line with a time of 2:37:29; and claim first place in the Men’s Vet 40 category and 25th overall. The result also beats the club Men’s 40 marathon record that was set back in 1984.
Afterwards Ben said “I’m obviously delighted to finish first in my new age category. With the combination of good conditions, a fast course and my recent form I was perhaps a touch overambitious at the start of the race. I found the last four miles or so really tough going, but you have to be prepared for that in marathon running.”
