The annual Mason Trophy meeting held at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham on 19 June 2016. . This is an inter-county schools athletics meeting involving all the Midlands Counties. Counties putting forward under 15 (junior) and under 17 (intermediate) teams These were Cheshire, Derbyshire, Greater Manchester, Hereford and Worcester, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and the West Midlands. This competition is used for Counties to make selection for the English Schools Competition at Gateshead in the near future.
Tamworth Athletic Club had athletes competing in both the Staffordshire team and the Warwickshire teams after winning or being runner up in in their respective county Championships that were held the week before.
Dan Cartwright competed under the Staffordshire banner. Dan had been out with injury for almost five months, but still managed to get his place in the team after coming 2nd in the junior boys 100mtrs at county. Dan finished 4 th overall (out of 20) just off the podium with 11.8sec only 0.04s behind 3rd and 0.06s behind 2nd place.
Lucy Wheeler competed as a junior girl for Warwickshire in the 100mtrs and the 200mtrs. She finished in a credible 7th = with 12.90secs in the 100mtrs and followed that with a 26.95sec in the 200mtrs.
Omolola Ogunnowo ran for Warwickshire in the 300mtrs for intermediate girls. This was only Omy’s 2nd 300mtr race after she won County last weekend. She started from the outside lane and ran a perfectly judged race to take gold in 40.16seconds, beating last season’s favourites of Natasha Harrison and Kaisha Buchanan into silver and bronze respectively. Omy was also part of the Warwickshire 4 x 100mtr relay team that took bronze.
Isabelle Neville had a hard day running for Staffordshire. She started the day with a 300mtr hurdles, winning her heat in 47.01seconds to give her 5th overall. Later in the day she ran the 300mtrs flat, once again winning her heat in style in 42.91seconds. Isabelle finished the day as part of Staffordshire’s 4 x 100mtr relay team.
Owen Sherriff ran the 400mtr hurdles for Warwickshire and finished 5th with a time of 58.43seconds.
Eve Clawley represented Staffordshire in the junior girls 1500mtrs. She had been carrying an ankle injury for a few weeks, but ran through the pain to finish disappointed and frustrated with the injury dashing her dream of being selected for the English Schools Championships.
Omolola, Isabelle, Lucy and Dan have been selected to represent their County teams in the English Schools Championships, so we look forward to some good results from these athletes in a few week’s time.
