Warwickshire County Schools Athletics Championships

Report by Gordon Densley

On Saturday, all the Warwickshire Schools athletes competed at Leamington in the County Championships. Finishing in 1 st or 2 nd place qualified these athletes to compete for their county at the Mason Trophy next weekend at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. There are 3 age groups in County Schools – Junior (U15), Intermediate (U17) and Senior (U20).

The conditions on Saturday were very poor with rain almost constantly throughout the day, therefore wiping out any chance of fast times.

Lucy Wheeler, from Tamworth AC, ran the sprint double 100mtrs and 200mtrs in the junior girls. She finished well ahead of both fields to take gold in 13.1sec and 27.4sec. This was even more impressive as she had been injured for 4 weeks prior to this event.

Omolola Ogunnowo ran her first 300mtr race in the intermediate girls and ripped the field apart winning by over 3 seconds in 40.7seconds, only 0.3sec off the county record. She then followed up with the 200mtrs only 20 minutes later, but due to the closeness of he runs only managed 2nd place in 26.5sec.
